Reflections: Why Change is Hard

Updated: Aug 17, 2024

Hi Loves,

Today I want to discuss the concept of change and how it is constant and yet, it doesn't seem to get easier over time. How can we find more ease in the face of change? Well, first of all, acceptance is the first step. Acceptance that change is constant and to gradually find comfort in this sentiment. We can find comfort in this concept by simply acknowledging the impermanence of everything. In yoga, impermanence is a main pillar of practice - the idea that everything has a beginning, middle, and end. Therefore, we can find comfort in this idea by remembering this when our emotions are negative, or we are feeling down. It is a temporary feeling. We can find comfort in change through the acceptance of everything having a beginning, middle and end and how even the most uncomfortable of situations are temporary. Change is hard because as humans, we love the idea of routine/structure and permanence. However, this is our greatest challenge in life to overcome together, because change is actually pushing us to our edges and assisting us in achieving higher states of consciousness by realizing that we are in fact the only 'thing' we have control over. Yes, change provokes uncertainty and as human beings we gravitate towards all things certain, but this is the key, abundance resides in the great unknown. If we knew everything, there would be no room for growth, and the path towards enlightenment wouldn't exist. We must dedicate ourselves as students in this life, willing to grow through change, and learn about ourselves in the process. Change can be exciting if we change our perspectives to that of acceptance and nonresistance.

Wave crashing down
