Stress and anxiety are major components of nearly
everyone's life. They can be beneficial in the short-term, potentially leading to positive adaptive behaviors and responses, but can also be extremely detrimental to well-being if unmanaged or chronic. According to The American Institute of Stress, ~73% of people experience stress to the point that it affects their mental health. On top of that, ~30% of people will experience at some point in their lives.
These stats highlight a problem that needs to be addressed. In many, if not most situations, this rampant stress/anxiety can be effectively mitigated if the proper tools of stress and anxiety management are utilized. These tools are what largely make up what's known as "Somatic Therapy". With this type of therapy, the goal is to build body awareness to ultimately improve the mind-body connection. Not only is this very effective for numerous mental health conditions, such as Depression, Trauma-Processing, or Addiction, but it is also highly useful for managing stress and anxiety. They teach you how to recognize undesirable states and how to self-manage them accordingly.
Even simple daily exercises that can take as little as 5min per day (such as breath work, meditation, and body scanning) can cause rapid improvements in mental activities such as focus and levels of happiness, as well as create immediate physiological responses including decreased heart rate and blood pressure (which is particularly important given that the leading cause of death globally is Cardiovascular Disease). When applied consistently, these can have a profoundly positive long-term effect on mental and physical well-being.
If you find that you are overly stressed or anxious to the point where you are losing control, seeking a Somatic Therapist would be worth your while. You may need more attention and work than just the simple exercises. Give your body its due diligence and don't let problems sit and worsen. Having a trained professional guide and teach you methods of management will slingshot you towards a better life and allow you to live much more unfretted.
